My hard drive piles up with practice sessions I've never got around to listening to, but there's too much good music not to do something with them. So, warts and all, I decided on a cathartic exercise to just throw it all out there!
Here's volume 6, and my thinking behind the session - An attempt to blend some Drum & Bass with Balearic urges!
I really love tracks that walk the line between the 80/160 bpm tempo zones, and personally think there's scope for further exploration of the melding of these flavours. Yes, I am already, and always have been, a huge Bukem fan, and the uptempo mellows, but I'm thinking long breakdowns, sections of tracks with beats at 80, boosting the energy then bringing back to a breather.
The two tracks that inspired me to do this mix were the amazing Yarni remix of Ragz, and Sean Holland's inspired take on The Inaudibles, coupled with recent Balearic dual speed deeps and mellows from Ken Fan, and Kaoru Inoue's reworking of Yasushi Ide, I'd love to be pointed more into the direction of these sounds, even if just for my own personal delectation!
There's a big chunk of my box that's bossa flavoured, which also straddles the dual speed line, and the Can 7 track has always seemed to me to be bossa flavoured but trying to knock on D&B's door.....
Special mention to 1 Giant Leap, when I first heard this out in a bar many years ago I had to find out immediately what it was! A tune in three parts, if ever there was, and marmite it may be, but India meets West meets Senegalese folk meets London underground circa 1995, with a gorgeous central transition, is not to be missed!
PS not the easiest to actually mix in spots, but persevered for the exploration!
